Notwithstanding AIPAC’s discomfort over the Omar-Tlaib case, there is more that hint of hypocrisy in its joining the general assault on Israel.

The brouhaha over the ruckus that erupted last Thursday between the Netanyahu government and the two radical, anti-Israeli Congresswomen, Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), refuses to subside.

It continues to generate headlines even after almost a week since Israel reversed its original decision to allow them to visit the country—invoking a 2017 law that permits the government to bar entry to foreign citizens, who support anti-Israel boycotts. Coincidently—or not—this dramatic change of heart took place soon after President Trump posted a somewhat caustic tweet, deriding Israel’s previous position to permit their arrival.

Thus, on Monday (8.19.2019), the two held a well-choreographed and emotive press conference, unsurprisingly well-covered in the international media, in which they lambasted Israel for its heavy-handed “oppression” of the Palestinians and its “undemocratic” prohibition of their planned trip. Likewise, they urged other US lawmakers to visit Israel to discover for themselves the “iniquitous realities” that, according to them, prevail here.



Israel’s perceived capitulation to Trumpian pressure sparked wall-to-wall condemnation from the Democratic Party—even from long-standing Israel supporters. A good number of pundits warned that the barring of the Democratic congresswomen could herald the end of the era of bipartisan support for Israel and expressed concern over what might await it in a post-Trump era—or, at least, a post-Republican era.

Cleary, the requested visit by two of Israel most vehement detractors created an extremely awkward situation for the Netanyahu government. Equally clearly, the government’s clumsy vacillation in dealing with the problem was anything but flawless and created a number of irksome questions marks as to its conduct—for itself and for its advocates in the public arena.

However, despite any misgiving one may have over the government’s handling of the “hot potato” left at its doorstep, the Omar-Tlaib episode—and the intensity of the reactions to it—raise several troubling issues.
Bipartisanship: At What Price?

The first of these is the question of the price that Israel is called upon to preserve bi-partisan support for it. After all, no-one can assume that the two fiercely anti-Israel Congresswomen would not exploit their stay in Israel to inflict the maximum possible damage on it—irrespective of any “inconvenient facts” they might have happened to encounter on it.

Accordingly, if Israel is required to forsake important national interests in order to appease a party, in which some of its most prominent members are viscerally opposed to the Jewish state, one might very well question the value—even, the very point—of preserving such bi-partisanship. Indeed, at some point, bipartisanship may well cease to be an invaluable asset and become a burdensome liability instead!



In this regard, perhaps the most telling—and most surprising—censure came from the prestigious and powerful pro-Israel lobby, AIPAC, which, as a rule, has consistently backed the decisions of the Israeli government—virtually without exception. Accordingly, public reproach from an organization so closely identified with pro-Israel advocacy is, without doubt, extraordinarily significant. Of course, for AIPAC, the issue of bipartisanship is an almost sacred value, the very “holy grail” of its political influence. Indeed, it attributes—with considerable justification—much of its political stature and sway to its ability to harness such bipartisan support for Israel. It is thus clearly understandable that it will react negatively to any development that appears to threaten that ability.
AIPAC’s Hypocrisy?

However, notwithstanding AIPAC’s discomfort in the Omar-Tlaib case, there is more that hint of hypocrisy in its joining the general assault on Israel.

After all, it would be difficult—even impossible—to imagine that the AIPAC leadership would extend an invitation to either Omar or Tlaib to address its annual convention or to provide them an opportunity to publicly berate Israel and blacken its name with baseless accusations.

Accordingly, the trenchant question raised is the following: If AIPAC would not permit access to Omar and Tlaib to allow them a platform to denigrate Israel, why would it find fault with Israel for not permitting them access to a very similar platform?

This, then, is the question that should be directed at the AIPAC leadership—and which they should be called on to address.

Continua a generare titoli anche dopo quasi una settimana da quando Israele ha invertito la sua decisione originale di consentire loro di visitare il paese, invocando una legge del 2017 che consente al governo di vietare l'ingresso ai cittadini stranieri, che sostengono il boicottaggio anti-israeliano. Per coincidenza, o no, questo drammatico cambiamento di cuore è avvenuto poco dopo che il presidente Trump ha pubblicato un tweet un po 'caustico, deridendo la precedente posizione di Israele per consentire il loro arrivo.

Così, lunedì (8.19.2019), i due hanno tenuto una conferenza stampa ben coreografica ed emotiva, sorprendentemente ben coperta dai media internazionali, in cui hanno agitato Israele per la sua "oppressione" pesante dei palestinesi e il suo " "non democratico" divieto del viaggio previsto. Allo stesso modo, hanno esortato altri legislatori statunitensi a visitare Israele per scoprire da soli le "realtà iniqui" che, secondo loro, prevalgono qui.

La presunta capitolazione di Israele alla pressione di Trumpian ha scatenato una condanna da parte a parte del Partito Democratico, anche da parte di sostenitori di lunga data di Israele. Un buon numero di esperti ha avvertito che il blocco delle donne del congresso democratico potrebbe annunciare la fine dell'era del supporto bipartisan per Israele e ha espresso preoccupazione per ciò che potrebbe aspettarlo in un'era post-Trump - o, almeno, un'era post-repubblicana .

Chiaramente, la richiesta visita di due dei detrattori più veemente di Israele ha creato una situazione estremamente imbarazzante per il governo Netanyahu. Di conseguenza, se Israele è tenuto a rinunciare a importanti interessi nazionali al fine di placare un partito, in cui alcuni dei suoi membri più importanti sono visceralmente contrari allo stato ebraico, si potrebbe benissimo mettere in discussione il valore - persino il punto stesso - di preservare tale bipartecipazione. In effetti, ad un certo punto, il bipartitismo potrebbe smettere di essere un bene inestimabile e diventare invece una responsabilità onerosa!

A questo proposito, forse la censura più eloquente - e più sorprendente - è arrivata dalla prestigiosa e potente lobby pro-israeliana, AIPAC, che, di norma, ha costantemente sostenuto le decisioni del governo israeliano, praticamente senza eccezioni. Di conseguenza, il rimprovero pubblico da un'organizzazione così strettamente identificata con il patrocinio pro-Israele è senza dubbio straordinariamente significativo. Ovviamente, per l'AIPAC, la questione del bipartitismo è un valore quasi sacro, il vero “santo graal” della sua influenza politica. È quindi chiaramente comprensibile che reagirà negativamente a qualsiasi sviluppo che sembra minacciare tale capacità.
L'ipocrisia dell'AIPAC?

Tuttavia, nonostante il disagio dell'AIPAC nel caso Omar-Tlaib, c'è più di quel pizzico di ipocrisia che si unisce all'assalto generale ad Israele.

Dopotutto, sarebbe difficile - persino impossibile - immaginare che la leadership dell'AIPAC avrebbe esteso un invito a Omar o Tlaib per affrontare la sua convenzione annuale o offrire loro l'opportunità di rimproverare pubblicamente Israele e oscurare il suo nome con accuse infondate.

Di conseguenza, la domanda più controversa sollevata è la seguente: se l'AIPAC non consentirebbe l'accesso a Omar e Tlaib per consentire loro una piattaforma per denigrare Israele, perché avrebbe dovuto criticare Israele per non consentire loro l'accesso a una piattaforma molto simile?

President Donald Trump retweeted a post on Wednesday from conservative author and radio host Wayne Allyn Root that American Jews “don’t even know what they’re doing or saying anymore. It makes no sense!”

Root was likely referring to that fact that polls show U.S. Jews overwhelmingly oppose Trump despite the president’s track record of supporting Israel, including moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem, recognizing the Golan Heights as Israeli territory, cutting aid to the Palestinian Authority, and tightening sanctions on Iran, which has threatened Israel repeatedly with annihilation.

Pew Research found that 79% of U.S. Jews in 2018 voted Democrat for the House of Representatives.

Root also complimented the president for his efforts on behalf of Israel.

Root said Trump is “the greatest President for Jews and for Israel in the history of the world, not just America, he is the best President for Israel in the history of the world… and the Jewish people in Israel love him like he’s the King of Israel. They love him like he is the second coming of God…”

The president’s retweet prompted a string of comments on Twitter both for and against him. One prominent name was Yair Netanyahu, son of Israel’s prime minister, who appeared to endorse Root’s words.

“We love president Trump in Israel! The best friend the Jewish people ever had in the White House! Thank you!” he tweeted.

The tweet follows criticism the president received after he said on Tuesday at the White House that American Jews who voted Democrat show “either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty.”

Liberal Jewish groups like J Street, the Jewish Democratic Council of America and Democratic Majority for Israel jumped on Trump’s comments, suggesting that he was employing an anti-Semitic trope about dual loyalty. Jonathan Greenblatt, representing the more mainstream Anti-Defamation League, also weighed in on their side.

However, other groups such as the Republican Jewish Coalition defended Trump, arguing that the president was speaking about people being disloyal to themselves and their own identity.

Taking the entirety of the president’s remarks, the latter appears more to be the case as the president defended Israel.

Trump commented on attacks against the Jewish state by Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, who have made numerous anti-Israel comments in the short time they’ve been in office. At a Monday press conference, the two hinted at cutting aid to Israel.

Trump said on Tuesday that “Five years ago, the concept of even talking about this – even three years ago – of cutting off aid to Israel because of two people that hate Israel and hate Jewish people – I can’t believe we’re even having this conversation.”

“Where has the Democratic Party gone? Where have they gone where they’re defending these two people over the State of Israel?” Trump said.
